POETRY

Picture

by Margaret Chula
After twelve years in Japan, Margaret Chula and her husband, John Hall, were pressed for stories by friends and family about their "exotic" lives abroad. The resulting collection of haibun-- prose and haiku combined--contains humorous, embarrassing, heartbreaking stories that offer glimpses into the lives of foreigners living in Japan.

Chula offers White Enso readers living in the US a signed, postage-free copy of Firefly Lanterns for $25. Email her at

Haiku and sports may seem like an odd paring, but the grace, balance and focus required of an athlete is exactly what the haiku poet seeks to capture an emotion, mood or action in a few words.

Grit, Grace and Gold focuses on Olympic sports, each of which is represented by three haiku in both English and Japanese: at least one written by Kit Nagamura, the others by a guest poet.

Evocative photography rounds out the beautiful collection.

                                                                                 by Mark Tulin

"Many of these poems take place on the California beaches of Santa Barbara and Ventura during the morning hours. My impressions reflect the energy I feel walking along the coastline, the people I notice, and the objects stuck in the sand. The sea is a glorious place to let your mind wander and to be truly humbled by its beauty."

In Search of the Sun
by Leza Lowitz

Though raised in Berkeley, one of the most diverse and progressive places in the world, Lowitz settles in Japan, one of the most outwardly homogenous and socially staid." In Search of the Sun" is the story of what Lowitz learned from both worlds. It’s the story of how she conquered her fears, blasted through inner and outer limits, and became the mother she’d never thought she’d be. And when the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown hit Japan, the disasters reinforce what she’d come to know by then: that the only true home is the one we make within ourselves.
